Brooklyn Nurse Charged With Sex Abuse After Hospital Patient Alleges Sexual Assault
A registered nurse working at a Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn has been arrested and charged with multiple sex-related offenses after a female patient accused him of sexually assaulting her while she was receiving medical treatment.
The nurse, Kuriakose Poulose, was arrested months after the alleged incident and now faces misdemeanor charges including sexual abuse, forcible touching, and harassment. He has pleaded not guilty, and the criminal case is now moving through the New York court system.
Arrest Follows Months-Long Investigation
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, the alleged assault occurred during an overnight shift on December 5, 2025, while the patient was admitted to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center for treatment.
Prosecutors allege Poulose entered the woman’s hospital room and rubbed her intimate areas without her consent while she was a patient under his care.
The woman reported the alleged assault to police the following morning.
Although the report was made immediately, criminal charges were not filed until approximately seven months later following an investigation by law enforcement.
Patient Previously Spoke Publicly
The arrest came shortly after the patient publicly shared her allegations during an interview with NBC New York’s I-Team.
Because of the sensitive nature of the case, her identity has not been released.
Her attorney, Nicholas Liakas, welcomed the arrest and said investigators should determine whether other patients may also have been victims.
He described the allegations as extremely serious and said the criminal charges represent an important step toward accountability.
Nurse Denies Allegations
Poulose voluntarily surrendered to police after learning of the charges.
His attorney, Boris Nektalov, said his client strongly denies all allegations.
The defense emphasized that Poulose is presumed innocent and argued that both the criminal prosecution and the civil lawsuit should be decided in court rather than through media coverage.
He has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
Civil Lawsuit Also Filed Against Hospital
In addition to the criminal prosecution, the patient has filed a civil lawsuit against One Brooklyn Health, the organization that operates Brookdale Hospital.
The lawsuit alleges the hospital failed to adequately protect patients by hiring Poulose despite what it claims were warning signs in his professional history.
According to the lawsuit, proper background checks and licensing reviews would have revealed previous allegations involving inappropriate touching while Poulose worked in New Jersey.
The patient argues the hospital was negligent in allowing him to care for vulnerable patients.
Previous Professional Misconduct Allegations
Documents from the New Jersey Board of Nursing indicate that Poulose was previously the subject of professional misconduct proceedings involving allegations made by two female patients and a female coworker between 2020 and 2021.
Although Poulose denied those allegations, the New Jersey Board ordered him to participate in a professional monitoring program because nurses are required to report incidents involving professional boundary violations.
The latest lawsuit argues those earlier disciplinary records should have raised concerns before he was employed at Brookdale Hospital.
Hospital Declines to Comment
Because of the ongoing criminal investigation, One Brooklyn Health has declined to discuss the specific allegations or its hiring procedures.
Hospital officials have also not confirmed whether Poulose remains employed by the organization.
The health system says it cannot comment while both the criminal case and civil litigation remain active.
Nursing License Still Active
As of July 8, 2026, New York State licensing records indicated that Poulose’s registered nursing license remained active.
The New York State Office of the Professions, which regulates nurses, stated that criminal convictions constitute professional misconduct under state law.
However, officials declined to comment on whether a pending criminal case alone is sufficient to suspend a nurse’s license before a conviction.
The agency said it investigates allegations of professional misconduct whenever sufficient evidence exists but cannot discuss individual cases publicly.
Professional Boundaries Are Essential
Cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct by healthcare professionals are treated extremely seriously because patients are often physically vulnerable and dependent upon those providing their care.
Nurses are required to maintain clear professional boundaries at all times and are prohibited from engaging in any inappropriate physical contact with patients.
If convicted, Poulose could face criminal penalties in addition to possible disciplinary action against his nursing license.
The criminal proceedings remain ongoing, and the allegations have not yet been proven in court.
